From a backpacker camp to a dive resort
A small, British-run dive resort on Egypt's Eastern Desert coast — peace, a private house reef, and a no-problem attitude.
History
2006
Roots Camp founded
An Egyptian entrepreneur established Roots Camp using traditional materials and basic construction, aimed at eco-tourists and backpackers.
2011
Relaunched as Roots Luxury Camp
Pharaoh Dive Club was approached to run a professional dive operation as the centrepiece of a relaunch with modern chalets. Reopened January 2011 with 11 modern chalets.
2012
Boutique Rooms built
The original Eco Huts were demolished and replaced with Superior Boutique Rooms.
2013
New reception and pool
A new reception building and the swimming pool were built.
2014
Terrace and beach dive centre
Restaurant terrace, wash house and beach dive centre work began.
2015
Eco Huts rebuilt, renamed Roots Red Sea
The Eco Huts were rebuilt and the resort took the name Roots Red Sea.
2016
Infrastructure investment
New kitchens and stores were prioritised.
2018
Foyer rebuild and Hall of Fame
Foyer subsidence required rebuilding and a new shop was added; Roots Red Sea was appointed to TripAdvisor's Hall of Fame.
2019
Private beach refurbishment
Refurbishment of the private beach at Abu Sauatir Bay began.
Location
80km south of Safaga, 14km north of El Quseir. Watch for the Kilo 14 marker on the single coast road running from Sokna to the Sudan border — Hotel Flamenco is the nearest landmark.
Nearest airport: Marsa Alam (85km). Most flights land at Hurghada (120km). Airport transfers are available for an additional fee — there is no public transport from either airport.
Free pick-up and shuttle from El Quseir Bus Station is available by phoning ahead.
